• Commutes

    • “Easy commutes are important. Live in a neighborhood you love, consider proximity to green space”
    • “Consider the best subway lines to live by”
    • “The value of an easy commute. It doesn't have to be walking distance, but being only one train or one bus away makes a difference”
  • Joining the DukeNY community

    • “I was pretty good - I was on the DCNY list then - and I was able to quickly join that board”
    • “It took me WAY too long to leverage the benefits of the DukeNY network either professionally or personally, and I wish I had done so sooner”
  • Apartments

    • “Finding an apartment, especially for a summer move is hard! Apartments go quickly! Very different than other cities. You have to figure out what you will compromise on for NYC living (space, location, layout, appliances, etc).”
      • Rent stabilized vs rent controlled, amenity fee, subway locations
    • “StreetEasy is the best place to find apartments”
    • “Pick your location in the city carefully, because you will live most of your daily life in that area. Look for an area where there are things around that you like to do, because if you select a place to live solely because it is close to work, or less expensive, you may find that you end up moving to a place where there is more to do. Don’t choose where to live based solely on proximity to work, because you may get a new job in a completely different location. I think it’s better to select a place to live based on what you want to do when you are not working - if you like to eat out, are there lots of restaurants? If you want to be near green space, is it near a park? You can always figure out how to make a commute work, but a neighborhood's character and amenities are not going to change very much (at least in the short term)”
  • Exploring NYC (food, culture, etc.)

    • “Resources for finding fun and interesting things to do in NYC, particularly for people my age”
    • “I was very familiar with the city and came for residency so was working/ socially engaging with my class pretty much around the clock. It was a great built in support network but I can imagine that knowing the high level ‘flavor’ or neighborhoods and tricks to finding apartments would probably be helpful.”
    • “Less really is more, especially since you can get pretty much anything here in NYC! Also, everything really is a league of its own, including prices”
