Navigating your way around NYC:
- On the grid in Manhattan, it’s helpful to orient yourself with the reminder that “East is Even” (all even streets head West to East, and odd streets go East to West)
- OMNY allows you to use contactless payments for MTA buses and subways. Using the same form of payment allows you to get one free transfer (between buses/subway), and after you ride 13 times, the remainder of your trips during the week is free
- MTA offers $5 one way CityTickets on the weekends for travel within NYC on LIRR and MetroNorth
- Curb is an app most yellow taxis use that enables pair and pay mobile payment
- Subway entrances are the same direction as traffic above ground (so if you want to go uptown, go on the right side of the street when catching 1/2/3 or 4/5/6)
- Pay attention to which subway entrance/exits to use according to your navigation system; traveling underground sometimes helps save time because you don’t have to wait to cross the street above ground
- NYC Ferry (great option if you have more time to spare)
- IKEA Red Hook has a free ferry from Pier 11
